Know Your Video Aspects Ratio a Little Better

The Movies, Web-Series, TV Shows, Short Clips, etc that we watch every day have their Video Quality, Aspect Ratio, and Duration set by their makers and video editors. However, they sometimes get too complex to understand and sometimes seem immaterial to everyone.

But trust us, your video aspects are really important, they have their own share in the experience of watching. If you are sorted with the video aspect and the overall quality technicalities, choosing the print becomes easy.

The first and foremost step of deciding the aspect is knowing its importance.

Remember the years when movies thrived in theatres and multiplexes, and CDs and DVDs were the new cool for bringing them home? Aspect Ratio mattered as we didn’t have the privilege to set them as per your convenience.

Aspect Ratio is simply the orientation of your video print (Width to Height Ratio) which if matches to the screen size of your TV, Computers, etc, shows the complete picture.

If the aspect ratio is wider than your TV Screen, you may not be able to view the movie properly as the sides either get cut or the black padding on the sides thickens. And such problems arise when the aspect is less wide than the screen’s resolution that you set your print in.

As time passed, aspect ratios went into standardization, the developers shifted their attention minutely to the aspect ratios and made sure they aligned with the Sharp Audio & Video quality, lightings, etc aspects that fulfill the overall quality of video delivery.

The aspect ratio is measured from the width to the height and is measured in pixels. If a video is in the aspect ratio of 16:9, the resolution of the same is 1920 px (pixels) by 1080 px (pixels).

Clearly, there is a significant difference in the Resolution and the Aspect Ratio.

What is a Resolution?

Resolution is simply the width multiplied by the height. On the contrary, the Aspect ratio is the division of width by height.

When you multiply the Width to the Height, the solution obtained is the total number of square pixels on the screen. To determine the resolution’s quality, the number of square pixels does the trick. Higher the number of pixels, the better the quality. With more pixels on the screen, the content display scatters and gains more clarity which makes the video output all the way better.

Now, more square pixels mean more clarity. However, it also means the higher the file size. A better picture quality means more bulk in the file which makes it larger. If the picture quality is low, the aspect ratio and resolution are low, the file will be of the compressed size rather than that of the higher quality.

Moving on, there are various Aspect ratios, and based on the screen and the quality requirement, their use differs too. As the Screen space, size, etc are different, there are more aspect ratios than one.

The standard ones are:

  1. 4:3 - It was used for old TV Sets and Computers. After the development of HDTV, 16:9 aspect ratios took birth and got used widely as these aspect ratios contain more pixels than the 4:3 ratio does. Today they have been washed away as the old TVs and Computers don’t exist.

  1. 1:1 - The square TVs have this resolution and they are used by Facebook, Instagram, etc but are not much in the notice as they are not widely used.

  1. 3:2 - For hand game consoles, tablets, and laptops, this aspect ratio is used. Also, it is used for 35 mm Still Photography. Not used much by the press, they are found in many Small to Medium size cameras.

  1. 21:9 - This is the Ultra widescreen aspect ratio used in Theatres, Theme Parks, etc.

Fun Fact: A wider screen helps you enjoy a thriller movie even better. Watch the Best ones on a big screen and get all the chills down your spine!
